Piels beer-The story behind Piels beer
Piels beer is a Lager Beer that was brewed in Brooklyn in New York, originally. It was situated on 315, Liberty Avenue in the east New York part of Brooklyn. It was created by the Piel brothers in 1883. They were Michael, Wilhelm and Gottfried Piel. German brewers preferred soft water that is available in Long Island and so, breweries grew by leaps and bounds in Brooklyn. Union employees of Piel are known to have promised in their union contract to serve beer, that is ice cold, in taps throughout the day. Today, Piels beer is looked at as an affordable beer.
Piels was expanded in a big way in the 1950s. It took over Trommer’s beer located in Bushwick in Brooklyn in 1951. It bought the Rubsam and Hormann plant situated in Stapleton in Staten Island as well as their label in 1953 in December. The Trommer plant had to be shut down in 1955 due to slow sales. The company was sold in 1963 to the Associated Brewing Company of Detroit in Michigan. The plant in East New York had to be shut on 20thSeptember, 1973 after being in operation for 90 years. The Williamsett plant brewed Piels beer ran for a short time in New England but was soon closed. Schaefer Beer bought the rights to the company in the 1970s. The Stroh Brewery of Detroit in Michigan bought them soon and ran the company for 149 years. The sales of Piels beer stabilized for a while due to new package designs and sale advertising. Finally, the Pabst brewing Company took over. It markets Piels beer in the states of New England and New York. The 12 ounce tall neck Piels beer bottles are available in a cardboard case of 24. The cardboard is coated with wax. It can be filled with ice and so, there is no need for a cooler. Piels beer has a fresh taste and low cost and hence, is popular amongst college students in Northeast US. It was the first beer to be taken in space.
